The Federal Reserve Bank of New York will introduce a new monthly survey of regional business activity on January 16. The Business Leaders Survey complements the Bank’s Empire State Manufacturing Survey, but focuses on business activity outside the manufacturing sector, providing additional insight into economic conditions throughout the region.
Participants in the New York, Northern New Jersey and southwestern Connecticut area respond to a monthly questionnaire on a variety of key business indicators, such as the level of activity, employment and prices. In addition, like Empire State, participants will be asked a series of supplementary questions on specific topics, and a separate report detailing the responses to these questions from both surveys—called the Supplemental Survey Report—will be posted each month. The January Supplemental Survey Report, for example, includes questions regarding expected changes in the firms’ workforces. Also, while this month’s Business Leaders Survey is the first published report, responses to the survey date back to September of 2004.
The January survey, together with all historical data, will be posted at 10:00 a.m. EST. The report will be released on embargo that day at 8:30 a.m. EST, with a technical call conducted at 9:30 a.m. EST. Going forward and beginning February 19, the survey will be released to media under embargo at 8:00 a.m. EST, and posted online at 8:30 a.m. EST. The Business Leaders Survey will always be released a day after Empire State.
