Staff economists examined local employment trends and presented analysis on which sectors are driving growth throughout the region. President William C. Dudley also offered remarks on regional economic conditions and provided an update on his national outlook.

Staff economists provided an updated overview of the student loan market and presented new research on borrowing trends and default rates. The economists also discussed student debt repayment by cohort, age and income and revealed that borrowers who left school during the Great Recession had particular difficulty with their student loan repayment.

A New York Fed press briefing on the regional labor market was held Wednesday, May 21. New York Fed economists provided an update on the jobs recovery in the region, and discussed how recent employment gains have been concentrated in lower and higher skilled sectors, while the share of workers in the middle-skilled jobs has continued to shrink. The economists also provided information and insight on the recent economic performance of the Second District.

A New York Fed press briefing entitled “Private For-Profit Institutions in the Higher Education Landscape,” was held Wednesday, November 20. The presentation provided information about enrollment, cost, student debt and completion rates for institutions specializing in two-year degrees and professional certificate programs. The briefing also included an update on local economic conditions from staff economists and New York Fed President William C. Dudley offered remarks about national and regional economic conditions.

Staff economists will present an overview of employment conditions for recent graduates and discuss whether they are having a tougher time today finding jobs that utilize their degrees than in the past. The economists will also present data on employment outcomes by undergraduate major—including unemployment rates, underemployment rates and wages—and discuss some of the implications of these findings for today’s young graduates. The event will also include information and analysis on current economic conditions in the region.

The New York Fed will provide an update on conditions in the region’s housing market as well as an initial assessment of the regional economic impact of Superstorm Sandy. Bank staff will speak on housing conditions in the region, with a focus on home prices, sales activity, delinquencies and foreclosures. Staff will also discuss Superstorm Sandy’s impact on the regional economy—examining the situation today and some potential effects going forward. In addition, the briefing will look at the storm’s impact on small businesses, relating some real life examples gathered from the Bank’s discussions with business owners.
