The New York Fed's video competitions are sponsored by the Regional and Community Outreach team to promote financial awareness in the community. The competitions charge university and college-level students to produce original videos that encourage young adults to practice sound personal financial decisionmaking. By combining peer-to-peer learning with modern video technology, the competitions seek to advance financial and economic literacy among young adults.

2010 New York City Video Competition

The New York City video competition was held for the first time in the fall of 2010. In conjunction with the Manhattan Borough President's Office, the New York Fed petitioned students from three local colleges—LaGuardia Community College (Queens), City College of New York (Manhattan) and Brooklyn College (Brooklyn)—to produce a 30-second video to inform their peers about the importance of using credit wisely. To assist in content creation, students received educational materials and college professors and New York Fed staff served as advisors.

The video submissions were judged by a panel of independent media industry and financial education professionals during an event held at the New York Fed. The winning video, entitled Think Twice Before You Swipe, was produced by students Estela Melendez, Byron Guinanzaca and Christian Guinanzaca at LaGuardia Community College. Joyce Rhueben, director of LaGuardia's Media and New Media programs, was their advisor.

The winning video was used to develop and produce a public service announcement (PSA) that will air at three New York City movie theaters from February 11 to February 25, 2011. The PSA will be shown before films at the AMC Empire 25 on 42nd Street in Manhattan, AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9 in Manhattan and UA Kaufman Astoria Stadium 14 in Queens.

2010 Puerto Rico Video Competition

Based on a successful pilot in 2009, a video competition was held in Puerto Rico in the fall of 2010. In conjunction with the Puerto Rico Bankers Association, the New York Fed invited students from across the island to produce a 30-second video to inform their peers about the importance of using credit wisely. To assist in content creation, New York Fed staff developed educational materials and served as advisors to the students. University professors helped to coordinate the process at their respective institutions.

The video submissions were judged by a panel of independent media industry and financial education professionals during an event held at El Teatro Tapia in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, in December 2010.

The winning video, "Students: It's Time to Get Credit," was produced by students Lorraine Valle, Carlos Javier Milanés and Juan L. Hernandez at Universidad Sagrado Corazon in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Sonia Fritz Macías, associate professor in the Communications Department, was their advisor. The winning video was used to develop and produce a public service announcement (PSA) that will air across Puerto Rico in 240 screens from April 1 to May 19. The PSA will be shown before films in all movie theaters in Puerto Rico.

2009 Puerto Rico Video Competition

The 2009 video pilot held in Puerto Rico, in which 34 university students participated, tested the concept of promoting the importance of personal financial awareness. Using social media to reach young adults in Puerto Rico, videos were created by university students that would have a positive impact. The winners of the 2009 pilot were Les L. Sepúlveda and Reynaldo García from Pontifical Catholic University of Ponce with “Pepe y Lola”. The second place video, “El Crédito Malo No es Sexy” (“Bad Credit is Not Sexy”), was submitted by Katherine A. Pereira and Susana Matos from Pontifical Catholic University of Ponce. Third place was awarded to “Robo de ID” (“ID Theft”) by Jacobo Concepción and Giancarlo Mena from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus.

The video submissions were judged by a panel of independent media industry and financial education professionals during an event at the historic El Metro Theater in Santurce, Puerto Rico on December 9, 2009.
