New York Fed to Release Research Comparing Regional and National K-Shaped Spending Patterns

May 27, 2026

NEW YORK—Tomorrow, Thursday, May 28, 2026 at 10:00 AM, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York will release a Liberty Street Economics post about whether the K-shaped spending patterns observed nationally hold true for a significant portion of the Second District (New York State, northern New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut). This post is being released alongside the quarterly update of the Economic Heterogeneity Indicators (EHIs), and the launch of its regional consumer spending indicators.

The upcoming post compares retail and gas spending patterns by income in the Second District to the corresponding national trends since 2023. It cites possible explanations for discrepancies in the K-shaped dynamics between the two areas.

The findings in this blog are based on the EHIs, which are economic indicators that measure macroeconomic outcomes experienced by different demographic, economic, and geographic groups—both nationally and in the New York Fed’s region.
