June Survey: Consumers’ Credit Application Rates Increase, Rejection Rates
Up Slightly
  • Reported application rates for any kind of credit over the past twelve months increased in June to the highest level since October 2021.
  • The overall rejection rate for any kind of credit over the past twelve months increased slightly to 16.1 percent in June, but remains well below the June 2025 reading of 23.1 percent.
  • Compared to February 2026 readings, the average likelihood of applying for a new credit card, auto loan, higher credit card limit or mortgage refinance declined somewhat, while the likelihood of applying for a mortgage rose slightly. The average perceived likelihood of an application rejection fell across all credit types.
  • The average likelihood of needing to come up with $2,000 due to an unexpected need within the next month increased to 34 percent in June, while the average likelihood of being able to come up with $2,000 increased slightly from 63 percent in February to 66 percent.
