May Survey: Expectations about households’ financial situations improved in May, with more respondents expecting to be better off financially a year from now. Mean expectations that U.S. stock prices will be higher next year rose to 40.5 percent.

April Survey: Consumers’ expectations for expanded federal assistance and social insurance programs improved, with the average perceived likelihood of an increase in welfare and unemployment benefits rising to 36 percent and 30.4 percent, respectively.

Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit
Total household debt rose by $184 billion to reach $17.69 trillion, with mortgage balances increasing by $190 billion. Credit card debt fell, as is typical in the first quarter, but transitions into delinquency rose again for credit cards and auto loans.

SCE Household Spending Survey
April Survey: The median year-over-year increase in monthly nominal household spending edged down to 4.6 percent in April 2024, the lowest reading in the series since April 2021, but still well above pre-pandemic levels.

Annual Survey: One-year-ahead home price growth expectation increased to 5.1 percent in February 2024 from 2.6 percent a year prior. In contrast, the corresponding five-year outlook declined 0.1 percentage point to 2.7 percent.
